I'm in the market for an electronic translator with a speaking/ audio feature. Would appreciate any advice and recommendations regarding makes and models from those of you who have used one. Thanks.

    Cheers

Do you have a smartphone? There are some pretty cool apps for Android/IOS/Windows Mobile etc that can translate, and most if you pay for the app include a speaking/audio feature. Something to consider.

The one I currently use is called Hanping Lite. You can use many different input methods and so far I quite like it. I haven't really played around with any others but for Android at least in the Play Store there are a lot of different ones to try.

I have two devices: APPLE iPad and HTC Mozart(Windows Phone)
In APPLE's IOS operation, you can easily find an translator apps. I am using "GOOGLE Translate" apps and it's great! You can speak the word or type the word to translate to many language. It's free!
Another app is called "word lens"  You can using the camera to aim the word and the device will translate the word into whatever you want instantly, but it cost some money.

In Windows phone (Mango 7.5) , The amount of apps are poor :( , so Microsoft made some good quality apps by itself.  I installed an app called "Translator", its made by Microsoft.  The app is good and you can enter the word by voice, typing and snap shot.

By the way, If you want to speak in Chinese and translate into English, I think you will disappointed by those apps, because the voice dictation  in Chinese is much worse than in English, The device is easily get the wrong word even I am a native speaker.

Another thing is that these apps all require internet connection. I dont know if there iare any offline translate apps.

    Verdict:
I would not recommend a Windows phone to you because I am a victim.
With Windows Phone you can't do a thing smarter.

    Good luck!

Google translate app does this and it also now has a conversation feature! speak to someone live in English while it gets translated into Mandarin - works the same for Mandarin to English voice.

Pleco ORC for scanning the Chinese language - great for scanning chinese products with no english etc etc

Both essential android apps for any expat in Taiwan.
    Connecting expats a better way
